Solstice Central!

Aloha, spring, aloha, summer!
It’s time again for the firebirds to sing,
time again for the ladybugs to juggle their spots
and the robins to calculate the sun’s advance.
Come ye, merry souls and welcome in the season.

Sunday, June 21, from 2 to 6 in the afternoon

You know the drill, so bring your musical toys
and sumptuous vittles and we’ll do ourselves proud!

An Earthy Image: Drawing on the Energies of the Garden…

Join us for Drawing Classes taught by NYC artist Barbara Slitkin. Using all our senses we will glean the abundant energy that the garden provides.
Creativity will be encouraged as we tune in on the rhythms, fragrances, sights, and sounds sourced majestically from Creation herself. As your intuitive advisor, nature will inspire your creative projects. Practical tools and instructional games will be offered as a guide for your own expressive drawings.
“Barbara Slitkin is the blend of a skilled visual artist, a fun loving performer and dedicated mystic. She expresses herself in many ways but always comes from a centered and inspired vision. She has much to offer the world and is well on her way to doing that.” Dagen Julty

Dias y Flores Garden on East 13th St. between Avenues A & B announces the Anti-Mike Summer Open Performance Series, starting this Wednesday, July 23rd and continuing every  Wednesday through August 27th.

For those not too familiar with Antifolk, it is an indieacoustic/folk movement that exploded on New York’s Lower East Side during the post-punk days.  Some of its better known alumni include Cindy Lee Berryhill, Beck, Roger Manning, Michelle Shocked, John S. Hall, Brenda Kahn and more recently Regina Spektor and the Moldy Peaches.  Kirk Kelly, a founder of the Antifolk movement whose debut CD on legendary punk label SST records helped make Antifolk a national underground phenomenon, hosts the new series.  The Dias y Flores series welcomes back the neighborhood’s Antifolk alumni while introducing a next generation of Antifolk icons.

Songwriters, poets, performance/spoken word artists, storytellers, jokers and anyone else looking for almost 15 minutes of relative fame can sign-up at 6:15pm.  Admission is free, all ages welcome.  No booze or controlled substances.

Come out this Thursday night and support garden member Shelley Roger’s film “Whats Organic about Organic?“.

Here is a brief description of the film from the website:

WHAT’S ORGANIC ABOUT “ORGANIC?” is a character-based mosaic. It delves into the debates that arise when a grassroots agricultural movement evolves into a booming international market. The film’s six characters each personify different facets of the dilemmas facing the organic community.

The event begins at 7pm and everyone is invited to attend. Special guest Jim Gardiner, an organic farmer featured in the film, will be in attendance. Click here for a flyer of the event.
